Uluwatu is the rugged, luxurious and surf-obsessed corner of Bali. While Canggu and Seminyak chase the party scene, Uluwatu keeps its energy in the ocean — cliff-top warungs, barefoot beach bars and villas carved into the headland. It's the place people come for three days and stay for three weeks.
- The cliffs. The Bukit's limestone bluffs plunge straight into the Indian Ocean, and the clifftop path from Uluwatu Temple to Suluban is one of the most scenic walks on the island. Sunsets here feel like a ceremony.
- The surf. Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin are world-famous reef breaks. Watching from the cliffs is free; riding them is a rite of passage for intermediate and advanced surfers.
- The luxury. Some of Bali's best cliff villas, boutique hotels and ocean-view restaurants are packed into a few square kilometres — without the traffic of the island's west coast.
Top attractions in Uluwatu
Uluwatu Temple & the Kecak Fire Dance
Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on a clifftop 70 metres above the ocean, one of Bali's six key directional temples. Come late afternoon, walk the clifftop path, then stay for the nightly Kecak fire dance as the sun drops into the sea — a chorus of chanting men, fire and silhouettes against an orange sky. Sarongs are provided at the entrance, and mind the cheeky temple monkeys.
Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park
Twenty minutes north of the cliffs, GWK is a 60-hectare cultural park built around the world's largest statue of Garuda and Wisnu (121 metres tall). It combines Balinese dance performances, art galleries and amphitheatre shows — a good rainy-day or non-beach option.
Padang Padang Beach
The famous "Eat, Pray, Love" beach: a narrow staircase cuts through the cliff into a pocket-sized cove of white sand and turquoise water. Small at high tide, gorgeous at low tide, and the waves here hosted the Rip Curl Cup. Come early to beat the crowds.
Suluban Beach
A hidden cove reached down a steep cliff path — surfers paddle out between the rocks while you sip a coconut in a cave bar cut into the limestone. Raw, dramatic and the most photogenic spot on the peninsula.
Bingin Beach
Accessed down a long staircase, Bingin is a strip of sand below the famous Bingin cliff bungalows and surf camp. Small, laid-back and beautiful at low tide — one of the best swim-and-sunbathe beaches in Uluwatu.
Nyang Nyang Beach
Uluwatu's wild card: a huge, undeveloped stretch of sand only reachable by a steep 20-minute hike (or 4x4 track). Almost empty, with strong currents — perfect for a private picnic and drone shots, not for swimming.
Single Fin Sunset
Perched above Suluban, Single Fin is Uluwatu's most iconic clifftop bar. Sunday sessions are legendary, but every sunset draws a crowd to the terrace overlooking the surf break. Arrive before 5pm for a front-row seat.
Surf spots: beginner vs advanced
All the famous Uluwatu breaks are reef breaks — powerful, crowded and shallow. They reward experience and punish mistakes.

Rip currents are common on all Bukit beaches. Swim near lifeguards, respect red flags, and check tide times — most of these beaches are far more beautiful (and safer) at low tide.

Where to stay: cliff villas vs a Canggu base
Stay in Uluwatu if you want the full experience: cliff villas with infinity pools over the ocean, jungle-warung breakfasts, and sunset at Single Fin on foot. It's quieter and more spread out than Canggu — you'll want a scooter or driver for everything.
Base yourself in Canggu if you want nightlife, cafes, gyms and digital-nomad energy, then day-trip down to Uluwatu. The drive is 45–60 minutes each way — fine for a day trip, tiring if you do it every day. Many visitors do a split stay: a few nights in Canggu, a few nights in Uluwatu.
