Why Travel Bangkok by Boat?
Bangkok was built on water. The Chao Phraya River and its network of khlongs (canals) are still the city's fastest, cheapest and most scenic arteries — a boat ride that takes 15 minutes can take an hour by taxi in traffic. For visitors, the river connects almost every major landmark: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, ICONSIAM, Asiatique, Chinatown and Khao San Road.
There are four different boat systems in Bangkok, each with its own ticket, piers and purpose:

1. Chao Phraya Express Boat (Public)
The river's commuter workhorse, running since 1971. Boats are identified by the flag colour at the bow — each colour is a different route with different stops and fares. Fares were last adjusted 17 July 2026 (a 1-baht decrease across all lines due to lower diesel prices):

2. Khlong Saen Saep Canal Boats
The "water bus" of Bangkok's canals — 100 boats, 40–50 seats each, running 18 km along the Saen Saep canal and carrying ~60,000 passengers a day since 1990. It's the fastest way to beat traffic between the old city (Golden Mount) and the Sukhumvit / Pratunam shopping districts. Boats come every 5–15 minutes.

3. Chao Phraya Tourist Boat (Blue Flag) — Hop-On Hop-Off
The easiest option for sightseers. The blue-flag tourist boat runs every ~30 minutes between Sathorn and Phra Arthit, stopping at 10 piers near all the big attractions. The all-day pass lets you hop on and off freely between 08:30 and 19:15, and routes extend to Asiatique in the late afternoon/evening.

Express and canal boats are cash only. Carry small notes and coins (20s and 10s).
⏰ Weekday vs weekend
Yellow/green-yellow/red express lines run weekdays only; orange runs Mon–Fri with yellow replacing it daytime on weekends.
🔁 Cross-river ferries
Short ferries across the river (e.g. Tha Tien → Wat Arun) cost ~5 THB — cheaper than the tourist boat for one crossing.
🌅 Sunset timing
Dinner cruises board 18:00–19:45. The last tourist boat from Sathorn is 19:15; book sunset cruises 17:00 for golden-hour photos.
